A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
