Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces expanding in power within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the central cast to embark on their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the party knows exactly where to go next after a intense initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above the urban center, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
  • The adventurer knows the region and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could enable the group access places they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them little choice but to travel to Timmony in search of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the other eight participants to form the Explorers and Planners parties.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
