Prime TV Selections: 7 Must-Watch Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's bold satire examines the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore offers a masterful acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature actress reduced to hosting a workout series on TV. Edged out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying treatment called "The Substance". This generates a younger clone called Sue, resulting in a progressively vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from writing about world issues to board a high-end voyage with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich passengers. But after an enigmatic female falls into the sea overnight and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence

Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities in this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a celebration in Mallorca for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has left the children anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a basement, he anticipates the worst. Yet the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in this director's delightfully tacky true story about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the character with compassion. October 14th, late night, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh is a intelligence thriller as sharp like the turtlenecks used by the actor's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors take part the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema
