The artist has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the UK's small concert spaces.

The star was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has chosen to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds supported spaces that were facing possible closure due to challenges arising from floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues received financial assistance in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from shows in big venues helps the independent spots, where it begins for artists like me, is just logical," the star has commented.

He is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

Back when they earned the trophy in 1996 for their record their work, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would contribute their winnings to the organization the charity.

In 2002, musician the artist divided her bounty among multiple charities, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

Previously, Ezra Collective donated their winnings to the youth organization that developed their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People gave their award to a charity for MS after a friend was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was ample," said singer Small. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had protected a couple of local spots in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and the second in the city were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by a national body and supporters who acquire "shares" in the venues.
